whilst flipping through the channels last night, we found that vh1 was once again broadcasting “the blues brothers” (have i mentioned how much i love that movie?). we didn’t watch the whole thing, since i’ve seen it fairly recently and neither one of us is a big fan of vh1’s butchering of movies (cutting out scenes, overdubbing cuss words, and inserting plenty of commercials), but we did watch 2 classic scenes: the visit with the penguin and the church scene. i love it.

only now, i’m seriously jonesin’ (did i just say “jonesin’”?) for some sam and dave. i’ve had soothe me running through my head since last night. how do i not have any sam and dave cds??

i don’t normally make friends in the workplace. i mean, i’ve always been friendly, but only as much as was necessary to get me through the day. one of the first things about this job that was genuinely different was the fact that i actually made a friend with whom i’d hang out after work.

granted, we didn’t start out as friends. in fact, at first, i didn’t like her. everyone else at the library was friendly to me, smiling and talking and making me feel like a member of the family, but she only talked to me when it was absolutely necessary. that got on my nerves. then one day, she walked into the break room while i was in there on my break, playing a game on my ds, and thus was the friendship born. we started talking about gaming, and we came to discover that we had a whole lot in common (such as, for example, not really making an effort to make friends in the workplace). soon ben and i were showing up at her house for board games and fun times.  we’ve even had her and her husband over to our house.

but lately she’s been acting weird. where she used to come up to me in the stacks and talk to me as i shelved, now i’m lucky if we exchange more than a few words. i just called her at the library to let her know i’ve talked a friend into reading at our read-out on monday (THANKS, MELISSA!!), and even though she was on her lunch break, she acted really distracted, and her tone of voice was odd, like i was a random person on the phone and not a friend. i’m not sure if it’s something like maybe she’s been fussed at for us talking during work hours or if she’s mad at me for something (i can’t imagine what)…it’s just weird.

at any rate, i’m starting to remember why i’ve never made it a point to make friends in the workplace… >.>

where the hello kitty has this month gone?  imagine my surprise when the library books that weren’t due until september 18 (such a long way away!) were suddenly a week overdue.

(on a side note, it’s a really good thing i’m a library employee.  i’d owe a fortune in overdue fines otherwise.)

so i have two theories as to why time seems to be going a whole lot faster (for me, anyway).  first theory is that i’m really enjoying my life…i mean, when i was working for the credit union, every week seemed to last a year.  days stretched on forever, except for saturdays and sundays (which seemed to last only a few minutes).  but now, i love my job, i work 5 minutes from home, and i have plenty of time to do other things i enjoy, like reading or gaming.  so yeah, time flies when you’re having fun.

my other theory deals with my impending 30th birthday.  i’m honestly not sure how i feel about it…it’s not like i think i’m getting old or anything.  30 isn’t old, contrary to my beliefs when i was 10 (although, on a bit of a funny/ironic note, when i was 10, my parents were 30.  wild).  i’m not going to suddenly become decrepit when i wake up on december 12.  i think probably any trepidation i feel about turning 30 really only has to do with the whole biological clock thing.  i’ll admit to having a touch of baby envy; alas, ben’s biological clock is apparently set to a different alarm time than mine.

my great-grandma used to say time only gets faster as you get older.  i hope she was exaggerating.

my sweetie has a cold.  he’s so pathetic…at least, he was yesterday.  he seems to be doing a lot better today, but yesterday was apparently a symphony of misery for my curly-haired beloved.  of course, he’s been playing video games the whole time.

i’ll bet he was really cute when he was a kid.  prolly stayed home and played that crazy ice hockey nintendo game all day long  when he was sick.

i hope we didn’t pass this plague on to my family.  we went to see them this past weekend…was much fun, although we didn’t get to see tabitha and the boys, since they decided to go to dollywood.  feh.

so anyway, i’m kinda concerned about our banned book week festivities at the library.  we’re scheduled to have a read-out on monday night, where people can step up and read passages from their favorite banned or challenged books.  only problem is, as of yesterday, only one patron had signed up to do so, whereas two patrons complained that we were contributing to the moral decline of the country by championing the works of such villainous heathen authors as shakespeare, alice walker, or j.d. salinger (or some such bullshit…i dunno…damn weirdo fundie psychos).  so at this point, to the best of my knowledge, the only readers will be a small group of us library employees and whatever friends and/or family we can coax into helping out.  it really brings me down, but i gotta remember that this is the first time anything like this has been done in our town.  and those goofy complainy types only reinforce the need for events like banned books week.

i may not agree with what you have to say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it.

yoga breaths…

(now let’s hope i don’t get sick myself…)

seriously.

why do people hate mimes?

also. i don’t know whether it still qualifies as summer or not, but i do believe catching a cold while daily highs are still in the 80s is some sort of cosmic joke. ben’s sick, and i feel like i’m getting sick myself. we suspect that between the plague that cam had during legacy con and the boatload of kids at maddy’s birthday party (a couple of whom were apparently sick), we picked up some mutant strain of blegh.

sigh.

before you watch this, a couple of warnings:

this is the lead singer of cannibal corpse. although i’m not a fan of the band or its music, i dig that he does voices for dethklok (he’s even wearing a dethklok t-shirt). and, he plays wow, and he has like 6 level 70s (that’s impressive). if you are easily offended by curse words, do not click. if you are easily bored by rants about video games and/or the people who play them, do not click.

that said, this is easily the funniest 7 and a half minutes i’ve ever sat through. ^^

so…

i didn’t get the assistant librarian job. according to elena, i came close, but they chose the other woman, a page coworker, because she has more library experience (2 years in a school library…20 years ago).

and yeah, i’m disappointed. sure, i get to take over her sweet schedule (MWF, 9:30-1:30, and every other saturday, 10-2), so i won’t have to work evenings and i’ll get more hours. and, like i optimistically keep telling myself, i can use this interview as a sort of practice, so i’m even more prepared next time around (with even more library experience under my belt). but damn. i wanted that job. :(

but so’s i don’t end this post on a downer, i’m gonna take a moment to count my blessings. i have a gorgeous husband who loves me and thinks i’m sexy (and who’s willing to let me take as long as necessary to find and achieve my dreams). i have a huge family, between ben’s and my own, who love and believe in me and all i can accomplish. i’m surrounded by friends who support me in everything i do. i have a beautiful house in a nice neighborhood, and i live comfortably. this was just one little bump in a long, long road, and i’m not gonna let it slow me down. \m/

first:
new album, season 1 on dvd, and a new season starting next sunday. the blackest, most metal part of my soul rejoices. \m/

second:
i love iron and wine.

third:
legacy con was pretty cool. it was great to see all our friends that we only get to see in real life once or twice a year, but i was concerned that this year was gonna be a bit of a bust. there’s been some drama in recent months on the guild forums, and we were having the main festivities at a different house (granted, the house right next door to where it used to be, but still…when you have comfort zones…). i am pleased (and more than a little relieved) to say that i was wrong. friday night was a bit uncomfy, but only because we were all (all 30 or so of us) confined to the house, because of the rain outside. (on a side note, can i just say OMG THANK YOU RAIN!!) saturday, ben and i went to maddy’s birthday party, and i finally got to see (and hold…and dance around with) banana’s new baby girl, audrey. we went back to the party scene that night and hung out until very nearly midnight. the send-off breakfast was sunday morning at golden corral, where we got the group picture. most of the visitors left shortly after (including our friends john and dom, who drove down all the way from canada!), while the rest of us went to best buy to goof off a bit. later on, we went to mikey and ginny’s to hang out, and i won my first ever game of munchkin (go me!). then we all (mikey, ginny, adam and michelle who were visiting from kansas and florida, respectively, steve, melissa, ben and me) descended upon the nubhouse for burgers and more gaming. my brain is kinda fuzzy this morning, though…i had an irish car bomb, a sam adams cherry wheat, and a shot of whisky…

hai, speaking of friends and hanging out and stuff, our friends david and debbie, who are from this area originally, will be moving back from texas in december. this will mean our usual crew will be 14 in number. wiiiiiild.

i fear i might be slightly hung over. it’s taken me 45 minutes to type this, and i’ve been craving coffee and breakfast with every keystroke. yeah…
