dear me from eight years ago:

just a few things i wanted you to know…firstly, you and ben will get married (woot!). also, 30’s not as bad as you think. and you should really consider going to grad school for library science. trust me.

but there’s more. don’t worry, joe’s not on the ballot this year, but that’s okay. he’s got way better things in his future (although, in retrospect, if he HAD won that election…). now, you know all those conversations you guys are having in class about “what if a community organizer or social worker were president instead of an old-skool politician?” well, it’s gonna happen. the next eight (yes, eight) years are gonna suuuuuuck, but have faith…the darker the night, the brighter the dawn when it comes. and boy, is it ever time. someday, we as a country are finally gonna snap and take our country back, and we will be led by the seemingly unlikliest of people.

just hang in there, babe. our time will come. i’m watching it unfold now. :)

a note to passers-by 28 August, 2008

if you’ve stumbled across my blog somehow and we’ve never been formally introduced (or i don’t know you from way back), welcome! have a look around, make yourself at home, and i hope you find at least one or two little things here that you like. but let me make a couple things perfectly clear:

this is my little corner of the web. this is my place to go to when i want to cuss out loud at whatever’s currently on my shit list, or when i want to celebrate supreme awesomeness, or cry, or laugh, or do whatever. it’s my online home, and i do welcome visitors. in fact, i love nothing more than when people come by and leave a note to say hello. and if you disagree with what i say here, that’s okay, too…i’m not always right, and it’s cool. leave insightful, thoughtful and fact-based arguments, and i’ll consider your position. i might not change mine, but it’ll help broaden my perspective, and that’s always win.

but. last night, i had to mark as spam two random comments from two random asshats who wanted to tell me what a horrible person joe biden is and how unfair it is for abusive men to be targeted and victimized by his violence against women act. you know what, folks? that shit don’t fly ’round these parts. you see, i like to think i’m an intelligent woman, and i don’t place a vote for anyone until i’ve done my homework on them. i’ve wanted joe biden on a presidential ticket for the past 8 years, and now it’s happening…and i could not be more excited. plastering your misogynistic, conservative talking points and propaganda here is the quickest way to find the place where all blog spam goes when it dies. if you wanna argue like that, there are thousands of other sites where you can do it (yes, i know those are more liberal sites than others, but i have this firm policy against visiting conservative blogging sites). my blog is not one of them. and besides, you should be thanking joe…if some feminist bitch like me were in charge, those same abusive assholes would be castrated (at the very least). sorta makes restraining orders look tame in comparison, huh.

so yeah. i always welcome new friends, friendly comments and friendly arguments. but if you’ve come here to try to muck up my happy home with your smears and fears, well, to quote brak, DON’T LET THE FRONT DOOR HIT YOU ON THE BACKSIDE ‘CAUSE YOU’RE STUPID.

thank you. :D

i like bill clinton again. his speech was fantastic…he called the bushies out on issues like katrina, the wealth gap, civil rights rollbacks, and iraq and he included “sexual orientation” in his demand for equal rights. among other things. (more…)

double-edged heat pad 27 August, 2008

Filed under: general chatter — freundlyfolk @ 12:53 pm

ugh.

my back is all kinds of gimped out. i was bending over to get my shoes from under the chair yesterday, and i felt that sickeningly familiar catch in my lower back, the one that says, “i’m totally gonna drag you down into a whole world of hurt when you least expect it and when it’s least convenient for you!!” for whatever reason, i was fortunately able to make it through uber-busy yesterday, from the puppet show to the meeting about the poetry workshop to the tuesday night get-together at the nubhouse. today, i’m staying off my feet, with my trusty heat pad (and the very good little cow) keeping me company. the bummer thing about my heat pad, though, is that it’s just that: a heat pad. the heat feels deliciously wonderful against my grumpy-pants back, but that’s about the only place where the heat feels good. so i sit here sweltering, all so that my back is a little happier.

stupid back.

p is for patriotic 26 August, 2008

Filed under: creative, general chatter, mumblemumble, politico, yaay for stuff — freundlyfolk @ 11:53 pm

actually, p could be for puppets, because BEN AND I ROCKED THE SOCKS OFF 106 TODDLERS WITH THE PUPPET SHOW TODAY. or p could be for poetry, the writing of which i will be teaching during a three month workshop sponsored by the women’s club of my hometown, during the months of january through march. and since i’ll be heading up the poetry workshop, i’ll be helping to organize next year’s poetry contest at the library, in april.

but at the moment, p is for patriotic, because hot damn, the past two nights have been some of my proudest moments as an american. first, michelle obama blew my mind all over my face (thanks for that catch phrase, mister) last night with her speech. tonight, clinton’s speech was just…wow. total insanity awesome times a jillion. for realsies.

see, here’s the thing: all of those people who were all, “i’m mad that i can’t vote for hillary, so i’m gonna vote for mccain!”? yeah, they got told (oh snap!). she actually listed out some crazy number of reasons why that mentality is just totally illogical. anyone who says they’re voting for mccain because they can’t vote for hillary after this speech was probably going to vote for mccain anyway. it was just awe-inspiring, the way she acknowledged her supporters, explained why she supports obama, and did an incredible job of promoting party unity.

i haven’t dug on hillary this hard since she was the first lady. i was reminded tonight why she’s just so damn cool.

maybe after tomorrow night i’ll like bill clinton again. i hope so.

in other news, wordpress is fond of reminding me on their login page that there are currently 3,920,094 blogs. on wordpress. not counting any non-wordpress blogs. and for some reason, i’m reminded of an article that was in my hometown newspaper a little over 10 years ago, when the interwebs were still shiny (at least, back home). one of my friends was interviewed, and in trying to explain webpages and the web, he said something like , “if i wanted to make an entire page just about myself, i could do that.”

that makes me chuckle, for some reason. countless millions of pages about countless millions of selves later, that quote seems somehow prophetic.

finally, some sad news: tonight, i got the last david hug i’ll get for a loooong time. he and his lovely wife deb are moving to l.a., all the way to the other side of the country. they’re going so david can earn his ph.d., so maybe they’ll be back on this coast someday. i hope so…david gives the best hugs, and deb’s the coolest vegetarian i know.

*grin*

haha linkies.

gnite. ^_^

oh my 25 August, 2008

Filed under: general chatter, mumblemumble, politico — freundlyfolk @ 11:20 pm

we’ve been watching the democratic national convention coverage since i got home from work. michelle obama just finished speaking a few minutes ago.

she wasn’t just good. she wasn’t just incredible. keith olbermann actually said something along the lines of, “i’m at risk of sounding sycophantic here, so i’ll shut up.” chris matthews professed to being very proud to be an american after hearing her speech. joe biden cried a little (as did i, and quite a few people in the audience there).

i think i’ll follow keith’s advice now…besides, it’s bedtime, and i’ve got a long day tomorrow full of puppet shows and meetings. but i couldn’t be prouder to be an american right now. ^_^

gnite.

Stephanie –

I have some important news that I want to make official.

I’ve chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.

Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois — the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.

I’m excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can’t do this alone. We need your help to keep building this movement for change.

Please let Joe know that you’re glad he’s part of our team. Share your personal welcome note and we’ll make sure he gets it:

Thanks for your support,

Barack
